The Mission is the “Why”. The Vision is the “What”. The Goals are the vision with “work clothes on.”-Dave Ramsey. Companies, teams, organizations, and individuals all need missions, visions, and goals. No mission means no passion. No vision means you are blind, aimless. No goals inhibits effectiveness, and efficiency.

Mission Statement: 3 components

Skills and Abilities: Talents, education, licenses, team members skills.

Personality traits: Friendly, compassionate, professional, kind, thorough, modern, educated.

Encompass values, dreams and passions: honesty, up to date, pleasant, respectful, fun and interesting.

A mission statement is a living and breathing document that can be changed and updated.


Definition of a Goal: an aim or desired result, intention, purpose.
We can have goals in each area of our life: Professional, personal, or family.

Why do we need Goals?

To be more effective, more efficient, make a difference at work, at home.

Goals provide a focus for an individual, group, family, or company. Goals help us achieve and accomplish our vision (objectives) with more clarity and efficiency.

What are some characteristics of successful goals?

Successful goals use the acronym “SMARTER”.
S: Specific
M: measurable
A: achievable
R: reasonable, realistic, but challenging.
T: Time criteria/deadline
E: Exciting
R: Relevant

What are some DUMB goals, or bad goal setting characteristics?

Non specific, not objectively measurable, unrealistic, too easy, no deadline, not interesting, irrelevant.
A goal that is someone else’s idea, like your doctor’s, your spouse’s.
Mentors, friends, counselors can help suggest goal ideas or plans to accomplish goal.
Examples of bad goals:
I wish …., I should ….., I need to ….
Get healthier.
Make more money.
Spend more time with my family.
Exercise more.

What are some good principles to successful goal setting?

  • Make them SMARTER.
  • Write them down.
    • Keep them in a system to review and refresh.
    • Write down WHY it is important, your motivation for that goal..
  • Keep them private.
    • Sharing gives a sense of accomplishment.
  • Establish a system of accountability, review, reflection on the WHY of goals.
    • A weekly review.
  • Break a big goal into actionable items with timelines.
  • Be intentional, set yourself up for success through planning and organizing.
  • Iterate your process to accomplish the goal if off course or schedule.
  • Celebrate your accomplishments.
    • Share your completed goals and accomplishments to encourage others.


25% of New Years Resolutions are abandoned by the first week. Don’t make resolutions, set goals. A job, a life, a project, a family, or a company without vision and goals is like a bottle in the ocean just floating aimlessly with the tides, winds and currents.
